Located in the Sheldon area of Beaufort County west of the city, Clarendon Plantation is currently a cattle ranch and dates its existence to 1780. First owned by South Carolina governor Paul Hamilton who also served as Secretary of the Navy under President James Madison. Hamilton is buried on the plantation grounds.
